Well, I finally find the time and internetconnection to update this blog. I believe, it has been almost a month, since we wrote the last time. Much has happened, but let me start by saying this: Montevideo and Colonia are nice, but by far not as exciting as Buenos Aires. But it is this tranquility, that makes Uruguay so very sympathetic.
From Buenos Aires, we took a ferry over the Rio de la Plata (River of Silver) to Colonia. Colonia is the oldest town of Uruguay. Its oldtown was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was founded in 1680 by Don Manuel Lobo, at that time governor of Rio de Janeiro for Prince Pedro II of Portugal. Pedro II wanted a fort to be build to protect his empire in Southamerica.
The old quarter consists of only a couple of streets, easily to be walked through in less than an hour. It is very pretty though, taking you back in time with its cute houses, cobblestone streets, beacon, old basilika and some sturdy walls of the ancient fortress.
We stayed in Colonia for one night, enjoying an enormous sunset and a cool beer in a restaurant at the beach. If you want to get a feeling for the beginnings of life in southamerica, Colonia del Sacramento definitely is the place to go.
